Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to visit the San Diego region in 1542. The Spanish explorer sailed along the coast of California and on September 28 of the said year, Cabrillo anchored in San Diego Bay. In 1769, the Spaniards started building a chain of missions across California and by 1821, Mexico became independent of Spain. California was then annexed to the USA in 1846. San Diego grew rapidly in the 1860s and in the early 20th century, San Diego became a major US naval base. Today, San Diego continues to thrive and is the second largest city in California.
